New meta search engine Roomlr looks to bring transparency to the fragmented holiday home market

This week former and ebookers executive Bas Lemmens looks to capitalize on the growing trend in holiday home sharing with his new meta search engine: Roomlr. Powered by industry leaders like Flipkey, Housetrip, and HomeAway, Roomlr is a worldwide locator for holiday homes and apartments with over 1,400,000 listings in 30,000 cities across the globe.

This week Amsterdam-based Roomlr launches its new meta search engine and worldwide locator for holiday homes and apartments. Started by former and ebookers executive Bas Lemmens, Roomlr partners with industry leaders like Flipkey, Housetrip, and HomeAway so vacationers can locate every holiday home, for every trip, everytime. With 1,400,000 listings in 30,000 cities, Roomlr nearly triples the offerings of Airbnb. Using Roomlr’s App, desktop or mobile optimized site, vacationers can filter their search by price, location, and specific amenities such as kitchens and washing machines. In the search of the best possible user experience, Roomlr is also working to improve the direct availability of its listed homes and will soon implement the option for users to book directly on the site.

The idea for Roomlr came to Lemmens when he saw the growing demand for untraditional accommodations was only growing. Travelers are flocking online to book rooms free from the fees and formality of hotels. Already holiday rentals in 2010 comprised $85 billion in revenue across the US and Europe. But many might view Lemmens’ choice to support this ‘sharing economy’ as an odd one considering his involvement in and ebookers - two of the world’s largest hotel booking sites. However Lemmens argues, “the shared hospitality experience is an opportunity and fills a niche that the traditional hospitality industry was unable to fill until now.” This is a point echoed by many. USA Today, for instance, recently noted how holiday homes offer an experience hotels can’t compete with: the “opportunity to live like a native.”

These days there are any number of reservation search engines for flights and hotels, but nothing that brings Lemmens’ search for transparency to the holiday rental market like Roomlr. Lemmens sees many similarities between the holiday home market and hotel booking before he started working with Lemmens remembers how “hotel offering online was fragmented and what potential there was for a platform that would facilitate seamless comparison and global location services for online users.” In a few years Lemmens predicts the holiday home sharing market will be as large as the hotel market is today. Luckily for Lemmens and other travelers who wish to start their holiday home sharing experience, “Roomlr is the most logical place to start their search.”
